Definitions:

Everyone seems to have an opinion on the definition of restoration. Despite numerous attempts by at least 20 different authors to clarify the meaning, there is still no consensus. Thus, if you use the term, make sure you explicitly specify which definition you subscribe to.

Restoration Definition One: “A catch all term for river management activities including restoration, rehabilitation, enhancement and/or creation (Brookes, 1996).
Restoration Definition Two:“The complete structural and functional return to a predisturbance state." (Cairns, 1991).
Rehabilitation: “The partial structural and functional return to a pre-disturbance state" (Cairns, 1991).
Synonymous with enhancement: “Any improvement of a structural or functional attribute" (National Research Council, 1992).
Synonymous with creation: “The birth of a new (alternative) ecosystem that previously did not exist at the site" (National Research Council, 1992).
Synonymous with recovery: “The act of restoration to an improved or former condition" (Sear, 1994).
Restoration Definition from Dr. Terry Langford: "Restoration is the use of a disturbance to alter the effects of a previous disturbance"
